Working Mama

Let's discuss - working and being a Mama!

It isn't easy but it's doable.  Right?!

I went to Salt Lake City this week. I left super early on Tuesday morning and came back really late last night. As in I got home close to 1am. I was only gone one night but I didn't see Molly Anne from Monday night when I put her to bed until Thursday morning when she woke up.  I made it through with videos from Kevin and being super busy on our site tour.  It was actually really good for me to get back in the groove of overnight travel and I loved getting back in that market which is a huge priority for me at work. I hadn't been there since last April or May.  I could have gone in the Fall but I didn't feel completely comfortable leaving MA for that long yet and my work was totally cool about that.  Anyway, Kevin did everything by himself this week and everyone survived...including me who I guarantee was most worried over nothing!!  ;)

I know all of this sounds nuts but I'm a control freak! This was a big step for me!  It helped that I was with five guys and four of them are dads.  So they get why I was watching videos of Molly Anne at a stoplight that Kevin had just sent me!

So maybe I can be a mama and have a demanding career and make it work?

PS I exchanged emails with a dear reader named Ruth this week and she was so encouraging of being a mama and woman working in a mostly man's world type career.  Thank you for the inspiration, Ruth!

Back to being Mama. We are off to her weekly band appointment!  Then work.  In that order, always.

  1. I have a demanding job as well and also travel for work. It IS super hard being away from them and it's amazing how much you can miss your kid(s) and quickly forget the mundane, "unfun" aspects of day-to-day childcare duties. The one thing I enjoy about business travel is how "easy" it seems to travel by myself now that I'm used to flying with baby and baby gear!

I think you can have a demanding career AND be an involved parent--it just involves careful scheduling and prioritization. Weekends are sacred in our household and I'm very clear with my job that unless I'm traveling, I'm simply unavailable from about 5-7/7:30pm every night as that's dedicated family/dinner time. There are obviously some rare exceptions to that, but it works for us!

    Good luck!

  3. I'm glad things are going well! You have your priorities in the right order and with Kevin and Mills there while you're away no need to worry. Miss Becky sounds wonderful too. I bet MA was excited to wake up to you!!

  4. I'm glad your first big trip went well. I know it is hard to be away from Molly Anne but also important for you to be at work for you. What a great example you will be setting for her as she gets older. She is such a cutie. I love that photo of Mills helping babysit while you were away.

  5. Hi there! I have been following your blog for quite some while. I travel probably 90% of the time for work, and I constantly wonder how women like you do it all. Sometimes I'm worried I can't be a mother because of the travel. Thank you very much for sharing this!
