House Update - Cabinets

Something that I didn't expect to be fun has actually been one of my favorite things so far.  I think because our space is coming to life!

Last Thursday I met the cabinet guy at the house and went through each room talking about what cabinets we will do.  Well mainly bathrooms and a few other areas.

So here is our kitchen that we are trying to figure out what to do with.  I love the symmetry of this back wall.  We have 10' ceilings so we are deciding if we should go to 8' or 9' with the cabinets.  The top level of cabinets on the picture below just seem like such a waste to me because we'll never use them but maybe they make the space look better?  These cabinets are to 9'.

Here is a picture of cabinets to 8'.

And here is a picture to 9' without the upper cabinets and instead taller cabinets.  Kind of leaning towards this.  Thoughts?

Butler's pantry cabinets.  I don't want a bunch of glass front cabinets but we do want a couple so that's what this shows.  Any thoughts on this area?  Any must haves for the bar?

The below picture has our fridge area on the left (microwave on the right midway) and our island on the right.  We are going to make some tweaks to the island because we don't like the shape of the post on the bottom right and a couple other things.  Definitely wanted the cabinets on the opposite side of the island, at your feet as you sit at it....good storage space.

In the powder room, we may do a furniture piece like the below to save some money.  This one is a steal at $899 on Amazon.

As always, your thoughts are welcome!

  1. I don't like those small cabinets at the top. I'm just thinking it'll b wasted space. I think you should just do tall ones to 9'. That is what ours look like in our kitchen and I really like them. I definitely can't reach the very top shelf very well but we can still use them and if I can't reach something I just grab the step stool!

  3. Love the cabinets that you are leaning towards. We had that debate during our reno and ended up doing ours all the way to the top but our ceilings aren't quite as high as yours will be! My argument was that the open space was just going to collect dust and I sure as heck couldn't reach it anyway! We did one glass cabinet over our bar and I'll fill you in on a little secret! I went to the Dollar Tree and got the prettiest dark blue wine glasses (they have green too!) They are the thickest wine glasses I've ever seen and look so pretty up in the glass cabinet under the lights!

  4. Love the layout!! I would go with 9" cabinets... or something up there. Our friends just re-designed their hole kitchen b/c the cabinets were short and just made the whole room look off.

Love the single glass cabinet over the bar. We added a couple in our kitchen too and I am hoping it looks good!

Great steal on the vanity - so simple and pretty!

  5. If you do choose taking the cabinets to the ceiling get a good kick stool (something light and easy to move). We use ours ALL of the time. I almost wish I built a little cubby to store it...

  7. I like the 9 ft cabinets - and I would also suggest that you may want to add some glass panels to the area near the stove. That is a lot of cabinets and it might add a little visual interest.

Some other ideas that might be helpful is having the microwave either in a pantry or in the island and not visible. You may also want to designate a drawer as your 'charging station" and have outlets installed.

    Love watching the house progress!

  8. I love my taller cabinets. I use the fourth shelf for the less used things-but I use every bit of the space available to me. We bought our house new so there a few tips/tweaks I wish I could have made. For example-you cant have enough drawers. Make sure you have a drawer somewhere, preferably not near the stove (where mine is,) for kids plates and cups. Its really useful for my 3.5 year old to be able to help "set" the table with his own things.

  9. Think about moving bar sink all the way to the left, much more countertop space.

  11. Love it!! I say 9 ft too! With the bathroom drawers I've seen people put outlets in drawers so they can leave straighteners/hair dryers plugged in and then they're out of sight after! Love seeing the progress!

  12. Think about a disposal in the bar & a built in trash can for limes, bottle caps, bottles, etc. Also, maybe move the sink to one side or the other. That way there is more counter space??

  13. 9' without the upper cabinets. We have both a wine fridge AND a beverage fridge (for soda, beer, water, etc.) Each is on one end. Our sink is towards the right side, giving us more counter space on the left. If I had to do it all over again, I would definitely consider an ice machine, too!!!!!! Love the look of the furniture cabinets in the bathroom. We have that, too. Also, LOVE the microwave placement! Perfect height!!! EEEEEK! I know I say this all the time, but this is so dang exciting! If I'm THIS excited, I cannot even IMAGINE how excited you are!!!
