House Update

These little updates are becoming a mush of a lot of information.  It's actually been nice to look back to see how far we have come because a lot of days, I don't feel like we've gotten far. Then I think about moving in 120 days and I'm like, "WHO IS PACKING THIS HOUSE!?!!"

1.  We are still working on appliances and cabinets.  These two go hand in hand and they need to be decided on ASAP.  We get pricing from one more cabinet guy on Friday after we pick out selections from them today.  We are closer on the fridge decision too.  Other than money deciding this, there is also the water/ice dispense thing that we use many times a day that we want to be convenient. We don't want to make a cheap decision now that costs us more money later.  There is a lot more than it looks that goes into picking a fridge.  Cabinets, plumbing and electrical are all dependent on which fridge we choose.  Ahhhh.  I think as of last night, we are down to two options.

2.  Next Friday we are finalizing tile.  I think we have the company narrowed down after finally getting pricing from our install guy.

3.  Waiting on pricing for hardwoods, carpet, rubber flooring for exercise room and countertops.

4.  Electrical is wrapping up and audio video pre-wire is happening.  Dry wall soon?  We've had lots of decisions on how to line up the can lights and electrical outlets in the kitchen and family room area.  Yikes, I hope we made the right call on all that!

5.  Working on pool design.  AYE!  Any suggestions on what you like or dislike about your pool or one you visited?  What have we not thought of here?  Thinking no to the spa (hot tub) as of now.

Would you all be interested in a post where I explained how the house building process has worked for us?  I feel like anyone who asks me about it hasn't known how it works and I didn't know before we did it either!  I've learned a good amount in the last 1.5 years!

  1. Its really coming together! All of these finite details would stress me out! We had a pool at our first house in Charlotte while I was in high school and I loved it. When my parents designed it they had it shallow on both ends and deeper in the middle. It was nice to be able to stand on both ends! Thats all i've got as far as suggestions haha

  2. Sounds good. We have a game style pool which is shallow on each end. Now that our kids are older, I would prefer a deeper side to the pool. My kids like to do jumps and flips and can't do that anymore. Just an idea. We have a hot tub and on cooler days, it is easier to heat that up and take a quick dip.

  3. YES to the post. We love our little house now and have a reno in our short term future (bathrooms and kitchen) and then long term future we want to actually build. Tricky part with our city is we'd probably need to buy a lot with an existing house and demo the whole thing which will have it's own set of challenges, but building the dream to our exact specs is def on the horizon :)

  4. A spa/hot tub works as a fantastic kid pool when they are under 5. That and the tanning ledge-zero entry concept are game changers with little's. I love the ledge around the edge-I think that's also great for kids and dogs. My only fridge comment-get doors with storage. We had a french cabinet style fridge with water on the outside which was great-but the doors on the inside had no storage which was awful. We now have the kind with water on the door and storage on both interior drawers and it keeps the fridge so much neater. The stupid small condiments finally have a home. love the house posts-keep them coming;)

  5. Would love to hear about the building process (timeline, financing, etc.)! I'm also curious why you've been making decisions on flooring, cabinets, etc. along the way. I thought that was all done upfront by the builder. Help me understand! We are about 3 years out from building our forever home and I'm clueless!

  6. When we lived in Phoenix we built a pool. I loved what they called the Baja step and it is great for kids and dogs or if you even want to put a beach chair in there. I also loved that it was a salt water pool and had a pebble sheen finish. It was so smooth to walk on and hardly any maintenance. We had the built in pop up cleaners which were also great. The only thing I would have changed is the cool deck around the edge and I would have made the water feature a little bigger. I just didn't like the way the cool deck looked and I don't think it was really that much cooler than the rest of the deck.

  7. We built out pool last year. LOVE the baja ledge or whatever it's called. We made our pretty big for lounge chairs / an umbrella and for Conner to play in / on while he's young. We also have a HUGE area ("swim out") on the side where we can sit and enjoy drinks or just relax deeper in the water. (We doubled the size of this from the original plan.) We have two shooting fountain things coming out from the side. Love listening to those. SO peaceful. Everyone who sees our pool is like WOW - that is HUGE! I think ours is bigger than most, but I didn't really know that until everyone started commenting. Some said it was larger than their neighborhood pool. Ha! Anyway, the deepest point is like 6 feet. We have this CRAZY sloped back yard, and already had to put in a lot more for the retaining walls, so we weren't pushing our luck any more with the depth. One thing we would change would be to have made the plaster darker. We went with a light blue, textured finish with color, versus standard white plaster. Wishing we'd gone darker because if leaves / nuts fall in, it will stain. (The stain goes away, but it's more visible if you get what I mean.) Anyway, I will email you some pictures. OH! Definitely think about a cabana. That was an afterthought, and we are so glad we added it! I'll send pix of that, too.

  8. OH! Forgot more - my husband just reminded me. Go salt. We did. It's so much easier to maintain. Also - think about upgrading the equipment. We have one that is automated so with lighting, and all of the other functions, you can control remotely from your iPad, etc. We also have a variable speed pump - it lowers electricity cost - more efficient. We chose NOT to do a spa because we wouldn't use it in the hot months, and really - would we go outside when it's freezing to get wet? No. If you have a lot of trees, invest in a cover. Dang leaves make fall horrible. Okay - I think that's it for now. Sending pix later.
