National Redhead Day

Here's some useless but funny information from wusa9.com.  It's the first ever "National Love Your Red Hair Day!"

To help celebrate, here are 9 fun facts about redheads and my comments after each one:

  • The highest concentration of Redheads is in Scotland (13%) followed by Ireland (10%). Worldwide, only 2% of the population has red hair. - wow.
  • People with red hair are likely more sensitive to pain. This is because the gene mutation (MC1R) that causes red hair is on the same gene linked to pain receptors. It also means redheads usually need more anesthesia for dental and medical procedures. - I believe this from when I was in labor!!!
  • Having red hair isn't the only thing that makes some redheads unique. They are also more likely to be left handed. Both characteristics come from recessive genes, which like to come in pairs. - interesting.
  • Redheads probably won't go grey. That's because the pigment just fades over time. So they will probably go blonde and even white, but not grey.  - cool!
  •  Rumor says Hitler banned marriage between redheads. Apparently he thought it would lead to "deviant offspring." - good think Kevin has brown hair!!
  • Redheads most commonly have brown eyes. The least common eye color: blue.  - hey, my eyes are blue!!
  • Bees have been proven to be more attracted to redheads. - I remember mom putting packs of peas on me in the grocery store parking lot.
  • Being a redheaded man may have health benefits. A study published by the British Journal of Cancer suggested that men with red hair are 54% less likely to develop prostate cancer than their brown and blonde-haired counterparts.
  •  Redheads actually have less hair than most other people. On average they only have 90,000 strands of hair while blonds, for example, have 140,000. However, red hair is typically thicker so they it still looks just as full. - I have pleeeenty of hair.  And it's curly.  Chaos.

  1. Those are such interesting facts! My FIL has strawberry blonde hair, so maybe that explains why it isn't gray. Not going gray would be amazing! Your hair is beautiful. 😊

  2. Yay for us! Maybe this explains why my epidural wore off during labor...

  3. Fun facts! My dad is a redhead and his hair has gone white, not gray. It used to be SO thick and full. Funny that technically he may have had less hair. He has blue eyes, but is a righty. My grandmother and RJ's were redheads. Hoping I have one!!!

  4. I was just reading these facts and thinking about my fiery little redhead. I am shocked that only 2% of the population has red hair, but maybe I just notice gingers more often since there is one in our family.

  6. I have 3 redheads all with blue eyes and are right-handed. My middle child has an incredible pain tolerance, too! Do you think Molly Anne will be red headed too?

  7. For awhile we thought my nephew would have red hair & my sister did all this research on red hair facts too! She learned that because it is recessive you must have the gene from both your mom's side & dad's side. We found this fascinating, because we didn't know anyone on our side with red hair. Turns out that my grandmother who went white super early in life (early 40s & before my dad was born) has strawberry blonde hair! I've always hoped mine would go white rather than grey!
