Wedding Wednesday - Marriage Counseling

Today at lunch we have our first meeting with the minister at the church where we are getting married.  I think this is more of a game plan meeting of what we expect out of marriage counseling.  The minister is brand new to the church so noone knows how he does it.  We also hear it depends on the couple.  We are interested to find out.

This guy won't be the one marrying us.  My minister I grew up with in Maryland will be.  So it'll be good to kind of have a third party talk to us.  He will write a letter to our minister that we completed the counseling and we should be good to go.

Tell me about yall's marriage counseling!  How long was it?

  1. We did a short session with the guy who married us, an Army Chaplain friend of my Dads.
It was easy but nice. He asked us basic questions about future and life.

  2. i love this church!!! every time i drive by, i want to go inside and take a peek!

marriage counseling was actually one of my favorite pre-wedding tasks. it really brings up the important issues and, i felt, built a good foundation for communication in our marriage.

  5. We met twice with our pastor. He basically told us three things that usually break up a marriage (money, family, and, ahem, hanky panky if you will). He gave us tips on how to discuss these topics together before the wedding so we could set a game plan for how we will get over these hurdles when they inevitably rear their ugly head. I liked it, and learned a lot about Mr. Smith in the process.

  8. We went for a year and it was intense. It included a weekend retreat with other engaged couples and time spent "interviewing" married couples we admired. I thought it was awesome, but as it turns out even if you do your due diligence, if someone isn't telling the truth, it doesn't get you very far.

The second time around we had one session together with the pastor and one each individually. Less preparation, WAY better marriage.

I hope it will be an enriching experience for you both and that you will have some fun in the process!

  10. What happened to your marriage counseling session? Well, it does help if a couple learns how to communicate with each other with respect, and be positive with all the problems they would face in marriage.

  11. How was the session, Annie? My wife and I regularly visit our marriage counselor. This is to further strengthen our bond. I believe that it’s important for every couple to feel successful as partners, and I think our marriage counselor helps us achieve that goal. :]

  12. Marriage counseling is an exciting part before getting married. You get to know your “other” half deeper as you go through the counseling. I can still remember our marriage counseling experience and it was one of the most enlightening encounters I had in my life.
